The Transport Employees Union formed in 1975. Its members included bus drivers, maintenance staff, and clerical workers at the Ann Arbor Transportation Authority.
After a six-week strike in 1980, members later voted to affiliate with the Transport Workers Union. The local history records that vote on September 15, 1981, followed by the Local 171 charter on November 17, 1981.
That history is part of a continuing commitment to representation, participation, and solidarity among Ann Arbor transit workers.
